About On the Way Home
Chi-Fu Yang

The focus of this exhibition is confined to my two art series—Substratum and Completion and Dust.

The “substrata” of several pieces in Substratum and Completion are more haphazard, unrigorous and chaotic than before, which implies that the processes of their “completion” must be more strenuous and time-consuming. I often make fun of myself for my “masochistic” tendency. Nonetheless, behind “haphazardness, non-rigorosity and chaos” are the inner logic and magical power to be reckoned with. No sooner is the “substratum” transmuted into a basis, a field or a proposition, than it becomes an attitude and a viewpoint that should not be deprecated when looking at the external world.

“Dust” carries the implications of pollen spreading out with the breath of life as well as looking for companions and groups. The compositions of all pieces in “Dust” are based on part of those in “Substratum and Completion.” After the long and painstaking creative process for “Substratum and Completion,” I was eventually healed by working on “Dust”—just like wiping dirt on glass, the color blocks, especially the imbricated layers of pigment, gradually reveal the beauty of the scenery outside the window.

I expect my painting language to form its genealogy by itself, which is why the two art series seem to be “on the way home.” Although the journey home may be a marathon, and my feeling may be rather mixed, I count myself fairly fortunate to have a home and be able to go home. “Home” is waiting there…
